Empathy Test Q&A

Your name:
Isaac Howlett.

Where are you from?
Ashford in Kent.

Name of band:
Empathy Test.

Who else is in your band?
Adam Relf.

How would you describe yourselves? We've been described as many things; electronica, electronic pop, synth pop, retro wave and more. All of those are applicable I suppose; we make catchy electronic pop music with a strong 80s influence and a lot of synth sounds. I think one blogger said "dynamic, complex and dark"and that sounds great!

Who are your main influences musically?
This is a difficult one because we have so many influences and the way Adam and I listen to and consume music is vastly different. But one thing we can agree on is that the main, musical catalyst for Empathy Test was the soundtrack to Drive. We both loved the movie and the soundtrack and realised that that stark, economical sound was perfect for what we both wanted to achieve musically.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I'd like to make a living from what I do. Adam's lucky enough to already have that through his illustration, but like every true artist I guess we want to create something that out-lives us. Adam won't be appearing on stage, but I want to walk out on the Pyramid stage and hear my songs sung back at me!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Empathy Test has been around for a very short amount of time so our career in that respect has just begun. We've had some really amazing feedback already though. I'd say Iain Cook from Chvrches tweeting us saying he liked our first track, Losing Touch, is probably the best so far!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Nothing yet, really. Adam and I have known each other since we were kids and have had plenty of moments we'd happily forget along the way, but so far we're holding it together! I'm sure there'll be plenty to come!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
To be honest, we're still finding our feet with Empathy Test sound-wise, but EP title track and lead single Losing Touch has had such an amazing reaction we can't help but take note. It was the first track we recorded and to us it already sounds a little basic, but it's really had an immediate effect on people. It's simple, bold and inspiring.

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?
We're currently unsigned and self-managed so we'd ask your readers to check out our music and if they like it, share it with all their friends on whichever social networks they use. I think people forget that we might need help getting heard and that they really can help us just by posting it up on Facebook or whatever.
