The Big Bads Q&A

Your name:
Georgie Standage - Vocals.

Where are you from?
Guildford, Surrey.

Name of band:
The Big Bads.

Who else is in your band?
Michael Childs - Keys vocals, Mark Wraith Guitar Vocals, Iestyn Jones - Bass, Mike Porter - Drums

How would you describe yourselves?
We think of ourselves as “Epic Pop”. We really love creating songs that have an upbeat anthemic feel to them along the lines of The Killers, something that moves people and excites them! Everything we write comes from the heart first and then the song goes on a journey in our Big Bad World and it comes out, well - Big and Bad!! :-) Our songs focus on big guitar sounds supported by almost tribal-like driving drums and bass, soaring rich vocals from Georgie and Michael. Also we love big BV's in many tracks coupled with strong piano and synth sounds.
Our music is quite driving and has an energy to it. Big passionate vocals are our main goal. We try to write uplifting and hopeful stories.  Whatever the emotion at the route of the song, even if thats sad, we try to put a positive spin on it - such as, the future will be brighter and you can achieve it.  Also living in the moment and enjoying what you have right now.

Who are your main influences musically?
We love all different types of artist but mainly the big bold pop acts like Bowie, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Elton John, Springsteen, Queen.  We really connect with their flamboyant performances and all have worn some quite amazing costumes over the years as well!  More recently we really like The Killers, Bruno Mars, Pharell Williams, Lorde, Adele, Bastille.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to be producing the best music we can, and we hope to share our music with as many people as possible. We hope that more radio stations play our music and reviewers and bloggers help us spread our music so more people can hear us. Writing music and playing it live is the best feeling in the world and we just hope the public enjoy our music as much as we enjoy making it. Doing this band is a dream come true and our goals are constantly changing, we are driven people and we hope to find new fans along the way and we can promise lots and lots more music to come from The Big Bads

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We toured the 02 Academy’s in London, Birmingham & Newcastle and also the Deaf Institute in Manchester.
We all absolutely loved the tour. Playing every night and doing the thing you love to a crowd of people brand new to your music was such a fantastic experience. Being on the road together as a band was such fun...we did things we don’t normally do...one night we drove miles and miles to find a burger joint that was open, we were all buzzing so much - we’re all quite healthy eaters but on tour that all went out the window!
Georgie had to have her hair done every day for the tour - She pre booked to have her hair done at hairdressers near the venues - you should have seen the looks we got whilst out on the road!! - Her hair seemed to get bigger every day!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We have had lots of amazing experiences on the road... one venue was quite tough to play. They didn't have a suitable sound system for live bands and the sound engineer was brand new and didn't know anything about the desk he was using!! (he was a trainee sound engineer) so we had a lot of feed back! We still made the best of it and the audience were still rocking out! I’m not sure really if there is a moment we’d rather forget, because when you’re in a band you experience huge highs and lows, it can be really tough sometimes and not everything always goes to plan, but then when something great happens it feels even more amazing, we think you have to experience it all and just learn from the bad stuff.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Every Moment. This song has all the driving energy that most of our songs have, it has the tribal anthemic like drums that we love and the video is quirky - which is very us! The lyrics are positive and the melody is catchy like most of our songs and Every Moment is the first song of our new anthemic epic pop sound for 2014 - here is a description of our song and video.
Every Moment is an “Epic Pop” song! Its fun, upbeat and we’ve set the video to some film trailers which go really well with the track. It is the first song of our new sound for 2014. It has an anthemic filmic feel, tribal drum sound and soaring vocals from both Georgie and Michael. Lyrically the song is full of imagery but underneath that it's about wanting to be with some one to the point they fill every thought you have.

Where can we listen to it?

Anything else you’d like to say that I forgot to ask?
We thought we’d let you know about our Big Bads Diaries:

The Big Bads Diaries is set around our online The Big Bads World. Here is a little something about our fantasy world:
“In the Big Bad World, music has been banned. Seen as a disruptive and anarchic influence, it has been taken off the airwaves. Clubs and concert halls boarded up, radios smashed to pieces.
One band have fought this regime and will not be silenced. They refuse to stop playing. Thrown in jail, the only hope is that their devoted fans will petition for their release. In underground bunkers, the music of The Big Bads carries on, fans risking their own safety to keep the music playing, keeping hope alive”
We want to engage with our audience in a fun and quirky way. Its a way of getting across who we are and our personalities in a different way. The Big Bads Diaries are filmed in our “Big Bad World” we play funny games, talk about our touring experiences, talk about our songs and at some point very soon we’re going to start taking questions from people like yourself and our audience direct from twitter and answer them in our video diaries. The Big Bads will have a youtube video release every week, which will either be The Big Bads Diaries, a fun trailer for our next song or a Youtube song release. This ensures that we are engaging with our audience regularly.

Future Plans?
Our project for the whole year is to have a song per month coming out on YouTube. We also plan to releases the songs on iTunes. We have lots of new material and we are also working with our existing repertoire to bring them all up to date with our new sound.  We look forward to doing the video for each of the songs as well.

“Amazing” our recent release
We recently released a song called “Amazing” an acoustic and emotional song, we are beginning to receive some radio play and had some lovely reviews of the song. Georgie started writing "Amazing" 6 years ago . It was a very low point and she was going through an unhappy time, the song was a turning point and the phrase "I will get my chance to feel amazing" is a line that we hope will inspire others to believe when times are tough you just have to have faith that things will be ok in the end and you'll have a chance to feel amazing one day.
